She encouraged a sense of community by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931, Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rachel Carson

If it weren't for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans and on the world’s lakes and oceans.

Sandra Day O’Connor

When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. 2019-2020

Unit1 Women of achievement

A

1-4 ACDC

依据第二段第一句“Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace.”

依据第四段第一句“When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952, she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman.”

依据文章倒数第二句“But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement.”

结合文章第三段第一句“Besides this, the survey found that female students are far more likely to put social influence in first place than their male classmates”(此外,调查发现女孩比男孩更大概把社会干扰放在第一位)和后一句“the results of a former study showing that female maths and science majors are more likely to say they go into those fields to make a difference.”(以前的一项研究结果显示,数学和科学专业女学生所占的比率更大概说她们进入这类范围是为了有所作为)可以判断出两项调查的结果是一致的。

依据最后一段的第一句“One reason for the emphasis on improving the world probably has to do with the culture of colleges, which encourages students to connect their studies back to real-world problems.”(强调改变世界的一个缘由可能与大学文化有关,大学文化鼓励学生将他们的学习与现实世界的问题联系起来。)可以看出,选项C(大学文化的鼓励。)

结合文章第二段第一句“The survey found that 72 percent of graduating college seniors believe being able to have a positive social influence through their work is essential to their happiness.”(调查发现,72% 的大学毕业生觉得通过工作产生积极的社会干扰对他们的幸福至关要紧。)

所以,文章主要讲解青年的幸福取决于在工作中改变世界(make a difference),结合文章,第二段第二句“Making a difference is so important to them that 45 percent say they would take a 15 percent pay cut to work at an organization that has a social or environmental influence, and 58 percent say they would take a pay cut to work for an organization whose values are the same as their own.”(对他们来讲,改变世界是这样要紧,以至于45% 的人说他们想同意15% 的减薪去为一个对社会或环境有影响的组织工作,58% 的人说他们想同意减薪去一个与他们价值观相同的组织工作。)

9. F 10. E 11. A 12. C 13. G
